What are the Body Types and their Significance?
To maintain good balanced healthy body and state of mind one should know their body type. As per the Ayurveda there are 3 Body Types
- Vata – Air & Space
- Pitta – Fire & Water
- Kapha – Water & Earth
1. VATA
Vata Body type is composed of Space and Air. When it is balanced/in control promotes creativity and flexibility, if not produces fear and anxiety.
Deficiency: temporary state, Uneasiness, loss of consciousness
Excess: roughness of voice, thinness of body, dark complexion, need for warmth, throbbing sensation, hard stool, insomnia, weakness
2. PITTA
Pitta Body type is composed of Fire & Water. When it is balanced/in control promotes understanding and intelligence, if not arouses anger, hatred and jealous
Deficiency: dullness on face, reduced body warmth
Excess: burning sensation in the body, desire for coolness, yellowish coloration (of skin, eyes, faeces and urine), insufficient sleep, fainting fits, weakness of sense organs
3. KAPHA
Kapha Body type is composed of Water & Earth. When it is balanced/in control Kapha is expressed as love, calmness and forgiveness, if not it turns out as attachment, greed and envy.
Deficiency: sensation of waterlessness, internal burning, feeling of emptiness within the abdomen and alternative cavities within the body, movability of joints, thirst, weakness and sleep disorder
Excess: whiteness of complexion, heaviness of limbs, nausea, fullness of stomach, feeling of coldness, drowsiness, excessive sleep, looseness of joints

TAMAS, RAJAS and SATTVA are the 3 Gunas which plays pivotal role respective to human body.
Once you get to know about these Gunas you will be astonished to know the impact they make on our body and mind.
TAMAS – Decreased – Dull mind
– Produce feelings of heaviness and lethargy
Tamasic Foods:
- Meat, Fish, Eggs
- Recreational drugs, alcohol
- Overcooked, Burned, fermented, fried, barbequed, stale or full of preservative foods
Impact:
Overeating Tamasic foods makes person dull and lazy, lacking in ideals, purpose and motivation. A Tamasic diet encourages chronic ailments and depression.
RAJAS – Increased – Stress and Overexcitement
– Stimulate Mind and Body
Rajasic Foods:
- Processed
- Salty and heavily spiced
- Onions, garlic, chilli, refined sugar, soft drinks, chocolate, coffee tea, tobacco
Overeating Rajasic foods stimulate body and mind, cause physical and mental stress and encourage circulatory and nervous disorders
SATTVA – Balanced – Calm, Peace and Serenity
– Calm the mind and Sharpen the intellect
Sattvic Foods:
- Pure, wholesome, naturally delicious
- Fresh & dried fruits
- Raw, lightly cooked vegetables
- Whole & Natural grains
- Legumes, Fresh herbs & herb teas
Balanced intake of Sattvic foods increase vitality, strength and endurance; eliminate fatigue
What are the Poisonous and Unhealthy combinations of Intake?
- Ghee and Honey in equal quantity
- Egg and snake gourd
- Meat and Asafetida
- Cooked and uncooked
- Meat Juice and Curd
- Fish and Curd
- Spices and Curd
What are the Do’s and Don’ts you should never forget?
- For easy digestion, add ghee to cooked dal: add salt/jaggery to fried dal
- Dosa/idli made of sore dough will lead to Gastritis and Gall Bladder Stones. To nullify it add onion, chillies and jeera
- Do not take oil/ghee fried food as first food in the morning
- After oily food eat some sweet dish
- Honey & lime juice with luke warm water is very good in the early morning only, other times, it will lead to fast aging and destroy soft tissues
- Diabetics can eat unripe fruits, not ripe fruits
- B.P. patients should not eat sour fruits
- Fiber rich food and millets are good for eliminating constipation
- Drink water and diluted butter milk (salt added) while fasting (never take glucose)
